The main character is tragic, unloved and lonely and also very strong in his way. The happy ending at the end is not quite convincing and it is hard to believe that the main character had never had sex.
Overall a touching film that made me cry. Excellent acting and the script is good. It follows a quiet young black boy with a troubled upbringing, into school years and then later life.
It covers all sorts of topics such as drugs, poverty, friendship and growing up and it covers all these tastefully and tactfully.
The acting is fantastic, in particular Naomi Harris who plays the drug addict mother to perfection. Barry Jenkins manages to craft an incredibly captivating film.
Moonlight follows Chiron showing three prominent stages in his life his early years as a young boy, a teenager and an adult.
We get to see how Chiron finds himself as an individual and how people and how certain experiences he goes through shapes his future and the path he ultimately choses as an adult.
Each actor that plays Chiron in the three stages of his life does a great job, you feel like you're watching the same person grow up despite the change in actor playing the part.
However Travante Rhodes who plays Adult Chiron, delivers the best performance of the three actors playing the part.
The supporting cast also bring a lot to the story, and Naomie Harris who plays Chirons mother does some of her best work here.
Mahershala Ali who plays a mentor of sorts and father figure to Chiron, gives a wonderful performance despite the small amount of screen time his character gets to shine.
One of the main themes of moonlight is Chiron discovering his sexuality and coming to accept who is over time.
Phenomenal movie. I wish I'd watched it sooner. I delayed watching it because I thought it was going to be extremely dark and gritty. However, I got taken on a journey watching it.
Moonlight had such a beautiful message encased in the story. It's two hours long in total but it felt much shorter.
Every scene was gripping and I loved the character development. I'd definitely say this is one of the best films I've seen in a very long time.

Someone already said here it reveals itself very slowly. Very well put, it reveals all sorts of depths with superb photography and subtlely acted body language - there are no boom-boom dumbdowns here.
Yet you feel the important developments of a long timescale are nailed. Watched this film with the kids older teens. We all loved it and were impressed with the story, the acting and the casting.
The actors all did amazing jobs at portraying the same characters at different ages and stages of their lives. Highly recommended movie. A beautifully shot film, with an honesty that is at times jolting whilst never self consciously in your face.

The acting is superb, but so subtle that it's easily missed. Quiet nuances, a look, a movement. It is the art, the things unsaid, the gentle touches that makes Moonlight a truly great motion picture.
This film is so good at taking complex topics and complex emotions and describing them simply with simple words. The acting is superb. I can still see the sweet quiet boy inside the big muscular adult.
The mother who knows exactly her circumstances. The friend who is sorry but not completely sure what to do thereafter and finding his way.
The writing is superb. The scenes with the adult Chiron and his mother, and teen Chiron and the principal. The words between teen Chiron and Kevin talking about feelings they can't easily talk about, apologetically and unapologetically.
I can see why this won the Oscar. It tells a very individualized story in a way that is relatable and respectable to any one that has ever felt loneliness, heartache, bullying, or betrayal.
A Reaction. I am stunned. What a great piece of storytelling and cinema. Thank you, Barry Jenkins, for reminding us what true humanity can look like and where it can lead.
The movie trains the viewer to watch the story in the eyes from the beginning, when Alex Hibbert as Child Chiron gazes at Juan without speaking, then finally decides to let Juan remove him from a dangerous encounter with bullies.
Trevante Rhodes is outstanding as the adult Chiron. Lacking an appropriate father figure, he shockingly become the image of Juan with his muscular physique and assertive behavior.
Ashton Sanders superbly portrayed Chiron as a teen. Actresses Janelle Monae and Naomie Harris do a great job in roles that largely facilitate encounters Harris by driving Chiron away among the men.
The mix-up in announcing Best Picture at the Oscar ceremony is telling. After neglecting to give Brokeback Mountain the award it deserved in , the Academy got it right this time.
