The early minutes are boring with the basic romance, the later part may get some drama and tension, but it doesn't feel like a an ending worth the rest of the tale.

Still, there are rarely as many movies as interesting as this one because, although it does have two teens as co-protagonists, it is a lot more about their mother and her problems, a young woman ready to do anything for her children.

Rating: 6. All my reviews have spoilers! Wolf Children is an award-winning animated movie from and it's a co-production with Madhouse since Hosoda decided to use his own studio Chizu to make this film and I need to state that the change is reflected in the animation from my point of view.

Despite being a very acclaimed movie I do not think that it reaches the level of the other two, for the reasons I'm going to clarify above.

Let's start with the story: is about a woman Hana that got romantically involved with a wolfman, descendant of an extinct yamainu Honshu wolf , and they have two kids Ame and Yuki but, accidently, the father ends up dying and Hana has a hard time raising the kids, and, at the same time, hide the truth about them wolf children.

The whole story is told by one of the kids - Yuki - and although people may feel it touchy, since it's a way to praise her mom, this formula actually makes the plot at the beginning very weak, because everything seems to pass like a high-speed train: Love at first sight; connection between them; live together; having kids; and dad dies leaving mom alone with the two kids.

In 30 minutes you have all this information that don't create within you any attachment to the main character, and, suddenly the pace begins to move really slow So, don't go expecting any Japanese symbolism with the Honshu Wolf cause that is not the point, which makes this very conventional and predictable since only the drama and characters type seem to predominate here.

There's this questions that keeps popping in my head and I don't seems to find an answer - Yuki is telling the story about her parents but what is the name of her father?

Anyone knows? And it's rather strange that you see Hana alone without any family or friends and you never saw her work since she had the kids but she decided to move to the country side Where did she get the money for that?

A pension? Well they didn't seem to be married either The characters like the plot are predictable: Yuki snow is the energetic, extroverted brat, that becomes the common girly type, completely hiding her wolf heritage; Ame Rain is the opposite of his sister, he's shy and introverted and when he gains some self-confidence he becomes emo and hard to connect with.

It's also hard to see him leaving his mom, but he chose the wild side and animals don't keep with their moms forever. Of course Hana is the character you'll feel sorrier for, but the truth is that life is hard for any mother!

Mostly when they need to raise children alone with no help! And if kids are hyperactive they will be like two little wolfs too! So I praise the show for telling us that mothers are a treasure to keep and to be thankful for.

Anything else than that Since they completely disregarded any true symbolism to the extinct Honshu wolf that still has its local legends in Japan proving that is all just a secret to keep.

They could even be monkey kids! In terms of production values, they are good but not the best. The transformation appeared very simple and you rarely see them as wolfs again, the furry factor is not important here, but the drama!

And when one of those rare occasions appears they are mostly widescreen views with few close-ups. The background got a great improvement from the other movies but the characters design got more neglected.

Overall, it surely can fit the family audiences but leaves many questions behind despite the tolerate ending. Is Yuki going to have wolf kids?

Is Hana going to say to the neighbors that her son got in a trip with 10 years old and left? Rating: 9. Mamoru Hosoda has three times dazzled me with his films and has caught me in ways that other brilliant directors like him have beautiful but simple and heartfelt stories with a simple animation style that could easily rival the best CGI film out there and dare I say, the best Ghibli films.

Wolf Children proves to be all of these and more. The simple little tale of an unusual family of a human mother with two half-wolf-children finding their way in the world and coming to terms with their nature in their own ways.

The first part of the film tells us the heartwarming tale of the woman who fell for a man she loved only to tragically lose him an accident and now having to figure out how to make due by her self and not let the world know their secret.

With the first act told very simply as a love story it captivates the adult audience and sets the stage for the rest of the story to come.

As the years go buy the children grow older and start to discover more about their own selves and start to change from their early childhood selves.

The once aggressive and spunky Yuki takes on a more mature and graceful persona to better fit into human society but her brother Ame who started out as a timid and resentful child grows to be more in tune with his animal nature.

The two parallel stories that take an opposite turn which makes for an unexpected change in tone but a brilliant piece of storytelling.

I watched the film English dubbed from FUNimation which brings out an amazing cast including Colleen Clinkenbeard as Hana who nails her role and gives off an Oscar worthy performance.

Playing the at times frustrated, panicked and love struck character of Hana she shows her incredible range of acting abilities.

They also followed the Japanese casting choices by getting separate actors for the older and younger versions of Ame and Yuki.

The entire cast could also be spoken for as they all give wonderful performances and I'm sure the same could be said for the Japanese cast.

As to be expected Hosoda gives a brilliant visual spectacle with the animation combining the old traditional hand techniques with new CGI and even motion capture techniques.

The simple use of transformations for the young children over a morphing animation I thought was effective and simple be it for artistic or economic and practicality reasons.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto once again gives Hosoda his simple but effective character designs but given the anime cuteness to it as well.

The musical score is as always wonderfully done but not quite as memorable as TGWLT but a worthy listen to.

The highlight is the piece of music playing while the children and Hana play in the snow together given an overwhelming sense of joy to match.

I found my self glued to the two hour film and constantly reminiscing on it and wanting to watch it again and again.

This movie is a sweet and endearing film with a lot of heart the same charm of Steven Spielberg's early films and it's sure to tug on your heart strings quite bit and may make you cry.

Rating: 5. Approval: Sounds weird? Was it an enjoyable watch? Was it satisfactory in how it portrayed its themes? The backgrounds are detailed, the characters have smooth animation when moving, and various simple cinematics in lightening effects and proper use of background music make it one heck of good movie to stare at.

This of course applies to very standard uses of technology. Outside the simple wolf transformations, the movie could have easily been made in live action fashion.

Meaning, there are no funky special effects or characters with weird clothes and art style. Aesthetically the movie looks normal to the point you can call it bland, a thing which makes it forgettable in the long-run.

The description I gave in the beginning pretty much covers all there is to it. And in a way that is both a blessing and a curse.

It constantly keeps you engaged by jumping from one event to another before your emotions start to dull and you begin to think of stuff that make no sense.

And it is true; most of the plot makes no bloody sense if you try to rationalize it. It is like a sappy fairy tale in a way; it pretends to be about a normal life when in reality it is as magical as it gets.

It could have a lot to show regarding how to live, work, and raise a family in secrecy but just skims all that in packages of 20 minutes each and heads for drama alone.

Decent for its kind but eventually weak. CAST All the characters are fairly simple personalities; you can describe them in two lines and have no backdrop stories.

I can even say they end up being plot devises to the most part. I mean, sure, if you let your emotions to take over you will definitely love them for the simple and real way they act.

Of course if for any reason you begin to question their actions you will realize they are all idiots. But that is not what the movie was going for so it is not exactly right to expect things it never attempted to be.

Do you know what I felt about the heroine? I felt she was Bella from Twilight. How about using protection? How about asking your relatives to help you?

Do you even have relatives? Why are the country folk all so gentle to a stranger who lives isolated to the mountains?

I can go on forever with the plausibility issue. Hello, it has a wolf fetish and a romance that is just like Twilight but of course still better.

Plus it was very simple and rushed for the context it had. That is why I recommend the following titles as something that does far more with the whole theme of romance, coming of age, and animals hiding in human society.

Collaborative Content Work-in-progress Collection 5m Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki a You can add this anime to your mylist with the form above using generic files.

Yuki seems quite the normal tween, and an obviously deliberate contrast is painted between she and Souhei, desperate to be grown-up but feeling like children, and Ame.

Perhaps the message here is that every child is unique, and so is the path they must walk. Yet it might be seen to be a happy ending as well, depending on your perspective.

Ame has made his choice — he tried to tell his mother as a human, but her heart refused to let her see the truth. Ame finally trusts in his mother to understand him for what he is, and to accept him.

Without question, Hana stands out as one of the most extraordinary characters of this or any anime year. Her labors are not tales of Herculean grandiosity, but no less heroic.

I was just thinking if you would write a post on this movie, and bam…thank-you so much Enzo, and it is another brilliantly written post…I can't agree more with your analysis and thoughts.

I have watched this movie twice — both yesterday and today — and now I totally understand why you chose this movie to be your Best of anime movie.

I love all the simplicity in the story and the storytelling because beneath the simplicity, it's totally heart-wrenching, and you totally can ripe it apart and decipher the different meanings and messages conveyed.

To me, this is the power of great writing. I guess I would say Wolf Children for now simply because I am still emotionally touched, but, that again, both movies are very different, and I am not comparing apple to apple… I guess, like you said, this movie simply shows another great vision and talent of Hosoda Mamoru…he's really versatile.

Thanks Ron. You're right with regards to the subtlety of it all, though I felt the final third was a bit weak, as if Hosada and crew were trying to force tears out of the audience.

That's the impression I got, at least. I'd rank this on par with Summer Wars in terms of enjoyment. I think it's very….. Personally, I connect better with the works of Miyazaki and Hosoda.

I love Miyazaki for the magical world he crafts through incredible details, honesty, and a sense of wonder. And Hosoda, I love the sentimental touch he adds to all his otherwise quirky stories without dragging them through melodrama.

His potential is simply boundless, it's not often we see a director who can tell a story with both style and genuine emotion, while still striving to explore more grounds with each film.

There is a sense of Hosoda in every film, yet He doesn't get trapped in his own way of thinking, that's talent right there. As for Shinkai, I think you need to be in certain moods to watch his films, which are more like art pieces than straight forward narratives with well defined interactions.

It's hard to deconstruct his films the way you could with Miyazaki and Hosoda's works, you have to look at it as a poetic whole.

Long rant, but yeah anyways, I love this heartfelt movie from beginning to end, so I'm totally looking forward to Hosoda's next film.

Thanks for the great analysis Enzo! If there was ever an anime piece that I wanted to have a western live-action counterpart of so that people here can appreciate how deep and beautiful and poignant the anime medium could be it would be Ookami Kodomo.

The scenes of Hana trying to reach her dead husband and of Ame and Yuki growing up in side by side classes and beginning to truly seperate both without any dialogue were by far one of the best scenes, I have ever seen in anime and for that I raise my glass to you Hosoda-sensei.

A true reminder that anime should be considered dynamic art. Also the people who criticize Ame need to review because they've just wasted an hour because they've completely missed the point of the movie: To understand and accept something I find humans are finding harder and harder to do.

Good timing, I was just wondering when you were going to revisit this movie now that the subs are out. Well, I can't say if I liked it more than TGWLTT I'd say I like them both, just for different reasons , but it was an extremely touching, beautiful, involving watch, down to ending lullaby.

I agree about it being subtle and an hymn to both maternal love and acceptance, and growing up. On this latter thread I wonder if one day Ame will follow in his father's steps somehow — his looks and mannerism and even his clothes growing closer and closer to his as he grew older… — or live the rest of his life as a wolf watching over the land and its creatures.

A few shots of the scenery the flowers closeups are the one that most leap to my mind right now… and their fabulous mountain house managed to be both dream-like and more real than real.

I spotted P-A Works in the credits, I wonder if those backgrounds and details had their touch in them. Great work.

Acting, visuals, themes, symbolism. I too especially loved the running in the snow sequence, and how Ame's pivotal moments — much like his name — came with water and rain for instance.

Thank you for the review, Enzo! I'm always looking for new things to watch and this seems like a spectacular movie based on your thoughts.

I actually just watched Summer Wars because it was referenced in this post a bit, and I liked it, so looking forward to seeing this movie. I have a soft spot for animes involving canines in some form or another that screenshot of the wolf in the cage reminds me of Tsume from Wolf's Rain , despite being a cat owner myself.

Hey there I'm back!!!! I think that complete disconnect was done really well and we got a chance to see the world that Ame was becoming a part of by his sensei.

It was beautiful and his separation with his mother was so heart breaking!!! I can understand where she is coming from but I can also see that the "human world" wasn't for Ame anymore.

To him that world would never accept him for who he is and thus cut all ties with it. My only criticism is that Ame and Yuki did not have a chance to properly talk to each other one more time before he left.

Ashitaka roams the country in search of healing. Christopher Robin has grown up. But the boy, who once had countless adventures in the hundred-morning forest with his animal friends, does not live a happy life: he is in a s.
