Bruce B Super Reviewer. Sep 28, The Oxford Murders is a DaVinci-esque mystery involving murder, deceit, jealousy, and even Pythagoras.

If that sounds too convoluted, then we're in agreement. It involves the limits of mathematics and the meaning of truth as well as sub-plots, but it bogs down in labryninthian details.

I, like Watling's character Lorna, grew exasperated with Wood's and Hurt's characters. It was entertaining, but when the conclusion or mystery's unraveling must be painstakingly explained, something's wrong.

Maybe I'm just not Pythagorean enough to get it. Clintus M Super Reviewer. Jun 25, And I am an even bigger sucker for movies that have a convoluted puzzle to solve Sherlock Holmes.

This movie was an awesome idea that never fully reached its full potential in my humble opinion. But I must admit that I am such a sucker for the kind of discussion we see in the first five minutes of the film that I wish I could have just watched two hours of that.

The movie lags at certain points, and some portions of the movie seemed a bit pointless and just distracted from the overall narrative. Anthony L Super Reviewer.

Jul 10, The film tries awfully hard to sell itself as a "smart" film by densely packing the script with big words and setting itself at Oxford with actors speaking with posh British accents, but it's really just a poorly-acted, miserably-directed farce whose purpose is only to make idiots think themselves members of Mensa for having understood what John Hurt or Elijah Wood was saying.

The word choice in the script, Wood's lines especially, attempt to make the characters sound like the Oxonians they supposedly are, but everything that comes out of their mouths is really nothing but pure idiocy.

Truly an awful, awful film. Jay H Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. Arthur Seldom: the butterfly that flutters it's wings and causes a hurricane on the other side of the world..

What's more, the reader can enjoy the added bonus of painlessly absorbing some interesting philosophical concepts along the way.

Extract:- 'The mechanism for corroborating the truth that goes all the way back to Aristotle and Euclid, the proud machinery that starts from true statements, from irrefutable first principles, and advances in strictly logical steps towards a thesis - what we call the axiomatic method - is sometimes just as inadequate as the unreliable, approximative criteria applied by the law.

There is a film based on this novel starring John Hurt and other notable actors. I haven't seen it but it got very poor reviews - so probably best to avoid!

Reviewed for www. Jul 23, Christine rated it did not like it Shelves: mystery-agrentine. I like watching Inspector Morse and Inspector Lewis.

Okay, for Inspector Lewis it's because I like Hathaway, but still. I liked Numbers for a bit. I didn't like this book. Sometimes I don't mind when you can figure out the solution by page The Blood Doctor is somewhat like that but it is still a good read because of the characters.

Not interesting characters here. And boy, did I mind. And the book is like Numbers but after the first season and a half, you know when it got stupid Honestly, Char I like watching Inspector Morse and Inspector Lewis.

And the book is like Numbers but after the first season and a half, you know when it got stupid Honestly, Charlie has to tell the FBI, including a profiler, that they should negoiate!!

And math people wouldn't explain all that stuff to each other. Honestly, they really wouldn't. And I'm sorry, the guy becomes so smart about murder because he read crime novels?

Novels mean fiction. He should be reading real accounts. I hope that was a translation issue. I hate Miss Marple unless its Rutherford; she's just grand.

Sep 21, Gary Guinn rated it liked it. My actual rating for The Oxford Murders is probably about 3. But I would describe this book as a novel written by a mathematician for mathematicians.

Almost all the characters, except for the detective, are either professional or amateur mathematicians--including the first victim.

And a significant percentage of the pages of the novel consist not of story, but of one mathematician talking to another mathematician about some other mathematic My actual rating for The Oxford Murders is probably about 3.

And a significant percentage of the pages of the novel consist not of story, but of one mathematician talking to another mathematician about some other mathematician or about some theory of mathematics.

Short sections of narrative action, with just enough occasional romance and a little sex, are interspersed like small oases in a desert of cognition.

This may sound worse than I intend it to. I did enjoy reading the novel, though its brevity is probably a good thing. And the ending is an interesting twist.

And it does have Oxford as a setting, after all. I give the novel a qualified recommendation. It's hard to escape the reality that any crime drama set in Oxford is just asking to be compared to Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse series and, of course, the Inspector Lewis spin-off and the Endeavor spin-off on the telly.

Not an easy thing to live up to. He meets Arthur Seldom, a renowned logician who is an idol of his. When the student finds his landlady murdered in her parlor, he learns Seldom had received an anonymous note containing a symbol and indication that this was only the first murder to come.

I must confess that math and puzzles of logic are a foreign language to me so many of the discussions in this book were beyond me.

Normally, I love books set in England. There was also little character development, including the fact that we never new the name of the narrator nor had any real reason to care about any of the characters.

The book read very flat. There was nothing to draw me in; no suspense, no fascinating characters, no strong sense of place, and event the murders were uneventful.

The worst was that I identified the killer almost immediately and, in spite of the twists which ended up being rather silly. I found the ending totally unsatisfying.

The best thing is that the book was short and enables me to move on to my next book very quickly. Mathematicians or logisticians might enjoy this book.

I recommend mystery lovers give it a pass. Very enjoyable. I especially liked the Argentine view of England. It would have been even better if the translator had written it with an accent.

Perhaps the best would be an audio reading with an Argentinian accent. I tried to do it in my head but kept slipping back into rather banal english.

View 1 comment. Murder by numbers, quite literally. Two mathematicians, one an ageing professor, the other an eager young student, set out to unravel a series of murders in and around the ancient University city of Oxford.

There are puzzles within puzzles throughout this book, which should keep most people guessing until the denouement, even those eminent mathematicians out there.

I recently watched the film adaptation starring John Hurt and Frodo. A good job was done on said adaptation. Both book and film are w Murder by numbers, quite literally.

Both book and film are worth a little investment of time. View 2 comments. As a mystery, it was nothing special - although the idea was interesting, the way it was done left a lot to be desired.

It was unexciting and not very convincing. At least there some interesting bits about maths and a story abouy Buzzati that kept me going.

Oct 30, Andres rated it liked it. I would not recommend this book to anyone seeking a traditional murder story. In my opinion, any given murder story should be similar to others like it, so readers know what to expect.

Also, it should give the reader a chance to be ahead of the detective in solving the mystery, or at least be caught up with him. In this novel, the extensive mathematical logic and long paragraphs the author give us, makes it unable for anyone, except for logicians to follow.

Even then, if one were to follow what I would not recommend this book to anyone seeking a traditional murder story.

Even then, if one were to follow what the author was failing in explaining, the ending is unexpected, given no clues with which to predict or justify the conclusion.

One could argue the author was being revolutionary by creating a new type of murder story. However, the extensive mathematical explanations take away from enjoying the book and the way Martinez explains it, makes it very hard for one to understand it.

The book touches on a lot of concepts which are very capable of confusing a fellow reader and take away from the story.

What troubles me is that by introducing something so complex as Wittgenstein finite rule paradox, which explains that there are no set patters.

That for example, the numbers 1, 2 ,4 and 8 can be followed by any number and not necessarily By simply stating this, it is capable of making the reader think the works of the detectives are useless and there are no set patterns to the murders.

On top of it, many other mathematical theories are introduced that cloud the reader with unneeded information that is very hard to withhold throughout the various events of the story.

Throughout the story, the detectives find and analyze clues with ease without giving a chance for the reader to catch up or follow in their findings.

A book should be more than just a story. It should let the reader foreshadow, while still keeping a certain mystery. The ending itself is another reason why I did not like this book.

After explaining a wide variety of foreign concepts, they are not connected to the conclusion of the story and seem unnecessary at the end.

Moreover, it seems as if the author was unable to piece together evidence to prove the suspects guilt or innocence. Denying the reader the satisfaction of a villain being punished or any possible attachment to the characters.

Once again, alienating the reader from being a part of the experience. As one may see, The Oxford Murders is not a book I would recommend to someone seeking a classical murder mystery.

For these three main reasons: This book lacks content that most murder mysteries have, the concepts explained make the readers that are not familiar with them, feel left out during chapter long math lectures, and finally, the ending is not well thought out.

The Oxford Murders is capable of keeping readers in a haze and ultimately put down the book without first finishing it.

May 15, Tiffany rated it did not like it. God, what a terrible book. Well, no, I've read worse. But it's supposed to be a murder mystery, yet there is absolutely no suspense or tension whatsoever.

Actually, you all the characters are totally underdeveloped and unlikable. Bleh God, what a terrible book.

This was an ok read but I don't think I'd pick up another Guillermo Martinez in the future. The plot was interesting enough but the characters were quite flat.

One word of advice for those who haven't seen the film adaptation: don't watch it, it's one of the worst book adaptation I've watched! Oct 30, G. Lawrence rated it it was amazing.

Loved it. It had the old-fashioned air of an Agatha Christie novel combined with the mystery of maths and murder.

Half-guessed the twist at the end, but that didn't spoil it for me a jot. Marvellous book. Highly recommended.

Wittgenstein: This is a very pleasant pineapple

Seldom counters that all actions have unintended consequences and that one of Martin's casual comments to Beth had led to her murdering her mother.

The characters debate several mathematical, physical and philosophical concepts such as logical series, Wittgenstein's rule-following paradox , Heisenberg 's Principle of Uncertainty , Gödel's Theorem , circles , the Vesica Piscis , the possibility of perfect crime , Fermat's Last Theorem and its proof by Professor Wiles , the Taniyama conjecture , the tetraktys and the Pythagoreans.

There are references, also, of the Butterfly effect. Contrary to what Seldom states in his lecture at the beginning of the film, the argument of Wittgenstein's Tractatus does not actually proceed by the use of equations with the exception of a few simple equations in Wittgenstein's introduction of the truth tables and it is not expressed in the formal language of mathematical logic; the argument is rather a philosophical argument expressed in normal, albeit idiosyncratic, language.

Contrary to a statement made early in the film, electromechanical computers namely the " Bombe " played a crucial role in the breaking of the German "Enigma" cipher by British and earlier, Polish cryptographers during WW2.

There were some weeks of speculation on who would play the lead. On 26 December Tornasol Films announced that Wood was cast in the lead role.

De la Iglesia also praised Wood: "I'm delighted to work with Elijah, who undoubtedly has the most powerful eyes in the industry and who is perfect for the part".

British actor John Hurt was cast in the role of a professor of the university, who helps the young student in his quest to try to stop a series of murders.

De la Iglesia described daily in his blog the peculiar situations that happened during the production of the film. The film is his first foray outside his typical black comedy genre into more dramatic fare.

The Oxford Murders received mostly negative reviews. David Lewis, a critic for the San Francisco Chronicle , wrote that despite the fact that "there were plenty of talented people involved", the film had a "clunky script" and was "just plain boring, from beginning to end".

No spoilers here. Oh, and a final note, this has the overtone of a 'cost', but it isn't; the university in OPxfords is denoted in American terms Dean rather than Master, for example.

Americanisms abound and decimalization has arrived early in England. I have not read the author's romance series; I was interested in this book because it was 1 - an historical fiction; 2 - it was set in Oxford.

The author's portrayal of the rarefied atmosphere is really brilliant and frankly not a lot has really changed even today although there is a more 'common' element in the hallowed halls with more places being given out to the bright minds of today.

However the male chauvinistic view is still alive and well. A gathering for the retirement of a beloved professor leads to murder when our main character finds a body in the small chapel.

The search to clear her name of suspicion leads to another murder, a secret society, poisoning, love and self growth.

Will she find the killer? Will she cut of the ties that linked her to her past and now let her face the future head on?

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery! It takes place in the 20's - early 30's in England. Catherine, an Oxford graduate and published poet, returns to Oxford to celebrate a professor's I guess I should say 'don,' as the English do retirement.

After the dinner she and Dr. Harry Bascombe discover another don's body in a chapel. Both she and Dr. Harry are suspected of murdering her, so they decide to investigate.

A Golden Age Romp Oxford and murder; its all been done before and done well. My expectation were low, but I found myself pulled into this tale of pre-WW2 murder and romance.

Loved every articulate and well educated word. Exactly perfect for what it is! On the evening of 13 April , Tanner was due to arrive in Oxford by train at 6pm.

McLean, 19 years old, went to meet him at the station. Discovering that the train had been delayed, she returned home. At around 7. She studied in the front room while he watched the game on television.

Afterwards, the couple were seen by neighbours outside the house at around 4. Later that evening, Tanner strangled McLean, then forced her head face down and tied a ligature around her neck.

It took police searchers seventeen days to locate the body hidden in an eight-inch-high gap at the back of a cupboard under the stairs, crammed with household junk.

After emptying the cupboard's contents, Tanner had dragged McLean's body, clothed in ski pants and a T-shirt, from the adjacent bedroom, along the hall, and into the recess under the floor.

He then crawled along under the hallway to hide the body under the floorboards of her bedroom. Tanner left the house the next day to return to Nottingham , where he was a classics student at the city's University of Nottingham.

He was seen by a passenger on the 5pm bus bound for Oxford railway station. As he waited for the 6. In the letter, he stated how fortunate it was she had been met by a long-haired man who had offered her a lift home from the station when they were going their separate ways.

On 16 April, Tanner telephoned Rachel's home but there was no answer. He tried again the following evening and was answered by Victoria Clare, McLean's year-old housemate.

Tanner asked to speak to McLean, but Clare said she knew nothing of her whereabouts. Tanner's letter arrived on 18 April, and Tanner called the house again that evening, asking for McLean.

By 19 April, five days after she was last seen, McLean's friends had begun to wonder where she was. She was due to attend a meeting with her tutor that morning to discuss work for the new term and sit a pre-term exam at St.

Hilda's in the afternoon. College authorities notified police about McLean's apparent disappearance. Initially, the inquiry was low-key, as Oxford police received dozens of reports of missing students every month.
