Rich with nuanced character development and informed by American media its not quite so far or long as may be imagined. A consideration on illegal immigration worth your time.

Kevin M. W Super Reviewer. Feb 14, Based on true events, this movie uses loads of general rules of fictionalization. While that surely made it look somewhat unauthentic, nevertheless, it also helped to keep me hooked to the movie.

The project was almost always on the brink of destruction, but they manage to escape somehow. The story was nicely weaved, and I kept wondering what's next.

Because the movie is based on real events, it made me care more for its characters. Although it doesn't reflect the events as they actually occurred, the movie succeeds in dramatizing the events so as to make it more intriguing.

I don't know if I'd have liked the simple filming of the events without fictionalization. Probably, I may know it some day if at all I can get to see that movie "Tunnel 28" aka "Escape from East Berlin" which displays some real footage of the events.

However, the probability for that is almost negligible. One of the best escape movies which had escaped from my attention till date.

Oct 30, Based on a true story Der Tunnel was the story of a champion swimmer Harry who managed to escape from East Berlin to the West.

Some of his friends made it also but some of their families are left behind. But this movie showed the real life stories of the people in the DDR, what they had to endure and their urge to escape to West Germany.

In the beginning it showed more about making of the tunnel but even so it maintained the tension for almost three hours. The cast was well chosen and the acting was excellent.

A heartbreaking story that will have you on the edge of your seat. Worth watching. I highly recommend this movie. Don't miss it.

On his own escape, he is determined the arrange the escape to the West of his sister and her family.

The idea of the tunnel is born, but the project does not run smoothly. The participants struggle not only with the massive logistics of their task, but betrayal from friends in the East.

And always the East German police are close to discovering the plot. In The Tunnel the audience is dragged down to the depths with a group of Germans so desperate to get their loved ones from East Germany in that they are prepared to dig a tunnel under the infamous Berlin Wall.

The tunnel takes a year to dig, is seven metres deep and metres long. The story of The Tunnel is really the story of Harry Melchior Heino Ferch , an East German champion swimmer who escapes to the west disguised as a tourist.

Before leaving the state which has imprisoned him for four years he promised his sister, Lotte Lohmann Alexandra Maria Lara that he would do his best to rescue her from the oppressive regime.

Joining him in his noble mission is Matthis Hiller Sebastian Koch , an engineer with the knowhow if only the rest of the gang will listen to him.

He wants to rescue his wife and unborn child. Her intended is trapped on the other side of the wall, but does she really love him? There is a whole host of other characters who have their own motivations for helping out, but who can be trusted and who is a spy?

All the actos put in superb performances, transporting the viewer back to those troubled times. What makes The Tunnel such compelling viewing is not it's high production values and suspenseful story, although it has both in oodles, but the very fact that it is a true story.
