But the Ori are also still the most implacable, irresistible force our heroes have ever encountered; nothing less than the fate of the entire galaxy is at stake again!
And now there's an added twist: the Ori have a frontwoman, if you will, whose powers make the Priors look like pikers. Known as Adria or "the Orici" to believers , this beautiful young woman played by Morena Baccarin also happens to be the daughter of Vala, whom the Ori chose to bring their demon seed into the world; the uneasy to say the least Adria-Vala relationship provides many intriguing moments.
On the minus side, the show tends to break its own rules for instance, for a character who's supposed to be invincible, Adria often seems awfully, well, vincible , and the commingling of Arthurian legend, Greek, Roman, and Egyptian myth, magic, and other sources is occasionally over-the-top, even for this franchise.
Some episodes are plot-heavy, bogged down by too many characters past bad guys like the Goa'uld, and Ba'al reappear, as do several Stargate Atlantis principals in one episode or excessive techno-rap about time dilation fields, flux capacitors, and something called the Clava Thessara Infinitas don't ask.
Episodes in which the writers move away from the central Ori theme are less than stellar; "" exists mostly as an opportunity to make fun of the TV business and is as irrelevant and silly as "Citizen Joe," the worst episode from Season 8.
And finally, without revealing details, suffice to say that "Unending," which offers a possible fate for our heroes before totally pulling its punches, may frustrate some longtime adherents.
By and large, though, Stargate SG-1 has all the elements--humor, action, great effects, good story-telling and acting, characters you care about--to more than justify its ten-year run.
It will be missed. Special features are again bountiful, including audio commentary on all episodes, various featurettes, and five "directors series" entries devoted to particular episodes.

The central conceit of the original Stargate --the existence of an artificially created "wormhole" through which one can travel to different worlds light years away from Earth--was an intriguing one.
In seizing on the obvious possibilities for expanding on that premise, series executive producers-writers Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright have smartly retained some of the film's basic elements its amalgam of myth and theoretical hokum, or the ongoing clash of wills between scientists and soldiers , while adding a variety of fresh ideas including new characters, new locations, and a welcome dose of humor, much of it supplied by Richard Dean Anderson, MacGyver himself, who replaces Kurt Russell in the central role of Colonel Jack O'Neill.
The result is a show with multidimensional heroes and villains and consistently compelling story lines many of them introduced in the pilot and carried forward through subsequent episodes balancing excellent special effects and production values.
All this and full frontal nudity, too at least in the aforementioned pilot. Who can resist? The first season is spread out over five DVDs; the minute pilot shares the first volume with two other episodes, while discs 2 to 5 contain anywhere from three to five shows each.
Sound and visuals in widescreen format alike will take full advantage of any home system's capabilities. But aside from language and subtitle options, bonus features are limited to brief featurettes that play like commercials and provide little in the way of background information or insight there are no features at all on the first disc.
Then again, if you really want to know what that symbol on Teal'c's forehead means, or why the nasty, parasitic Goa'ulds look a lot like the fledgling stomach monsters in the Alien series, there is no doubt a Web site out there just for you.
Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible.
Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" pharaonic Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian gods from the original film.
The welcome notion of a continued plot thread sees offshoots that follow the reincarnation of Daniel's wife, Sam's father literally joining a renegade faction of the Goa'uld, and Jack in an unending quest to out-sarcasm everyone.
Amid a plethora of derivative look-alikes, Stargate SG-1 has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi.

Brandon J. Smith Top Contributor: Classical Music. Verified Purchase. Before saying anything else, there is one inescapable issue with this set, and it is well-documented through other reviews: This is, without a doubt, the worst packaging of any series I've ever encountered.
The outer box is attractive, and it looks great on my shelf, but that's the only positive thing I can say.
You can't just open it like a normal box; you have to lift the entire thing off the base, so it's inconvenient to do that every time you want to access a disc.
Once open, that's when the real horror is revealed. The discs are held in the worst possible way, as though the designers were trying to ruin discs and make it as horrible for the user as possible.
It's so bad that Amazon added a warning about it in bold print near the price listings. It's simply an embarrassment.
I was lucky, though: Taking the advice of another reviewer, I purchased some disc-sleeves and carefully placed each disc in one, inspecting them for scratches as I went.
Fortunately - miraculously - nothing got scratched, and I was able to watch the series without technical difficulties.
So, if you do get this set, keep in mind that you'll have this issue to contend with. For me, I took the risk, payed a little bit extra for sleeves, and it paid off.
I got a great deal on a tremendous series. For others, the packaging led to damaged goods, and it was not worth their troubles. Some more background on my perspective: Before purchasing this set, I'd never seen an episode of the show.
In fact, I'd avoided it. Catching glimpses of it here and there, it never looked very good to me. I had seen the original film, though, and after years of watching Star Trek, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, and other shows, I wanted to try something different, and I figured a show that ran for ten seasons must be better than I'd given it credit for in the past.
Also, I am a huge Farscape fan. All that said, I reach the first point I'd like to make: Stargate SG-1, in my view, is two different shows.
The first one ran for eight seasons. The second, after an unexpected renewal by the network, ran for two. Both are excellent, but they are clearly distinct from each other.
The most obvious aspect is that Richard Dean Anderson left the show after the eighth season, and he was the first among equals when it came to the starring cast, even if his role was limited during particularly the seventh season.
The other is that they wrapped up the main storylines at the end of the eighth season, not anticipating a ninth or tenth. New story arcs came about to go along with the updated cast, so it has the feel of a spin-off at least as much as a continuation.
I watched SG-1 just about every night for eight months. I would watch one episode a night, in general, occasionally watching two or skipping a night for various reasons.
Going through ten seasons, it never got old. Not every episode was a masterpiece, but few were really bad. Most ranged from good to outstanding. I love that they don't recreate the original movie.
Instead, they go a year into the future, recast the two lead roles, and take things from there. It's a great way to get a running start in the series premiere.
Notably, there's a scene with full-frontal nudity in the first episode, but you can get the revised "Children of the Gods" on a separate DVD.
There's even a set with that and the two post-finale movies that were made. Every science-fiction show has some hurdles to contend with.
The main one, by far, is the Star Trek comparison. You simply cannot make a sci-fi show and not have it compared to the various incarnations of Star Trek.
It set the template, so now shows have to either accept certain conventions or make choices to differentiate their own creation.
Farscape, for example, had the concepts of a living ship and bacteria that acted as the "universal translator.
In many ways, I do think Stargate is derivative, pulling influences from other sci-fi programs, but they always have a nice twist to make it fit well to this individual series.
The stargate itself is a network of wormholes, which we'd seen in Deep Space 9 and Babylon 5; the rings are a new take on the transporter; the zat guns are a particular type of phaser.
Add into the mix the occasional actor known for roles on Star Trek, and I think SG-1 reveals that it's aware of its influences and embraces the plethora of science fiction that came before.
It helps immensely that the show has so much humor and a great set of lead actors. I didn't particularly care for Teryl Rothery as Dr. Fraser, and Don S.
Davis' General Hammond too often did little more than say, "you have a go," but they were typically peripheral to the adventures of the SG-1 team, and each certainly had their moments over the years.
Shanks continued to have a recurring role in season 6, rejoined the cast in Season 7, and stayed part of the main cast until the series' end.
After Don S. Davis' departure from Stargate SG-1 after Season 7, Richard Dean Anderson's character was promoted to Brigadier General in Season 8; Anderson left the series' main cast after that season, but continued to appear periodically.
Ben Browder and Beau Bridges replaced them as Lt. Cameron Mitchell and Maj. Hank Landry in Season 9, respectively. The last actor to join the main cast was Claudia Black , who resumed her previously recurring role as Vala Mal Doran in Season 9.

All signs point to the fact that this is a map of many Stargates that exist throughout the galaxy - a development that makes the dream of the SG-1 team to travel throughout the universe in time a reality.
Written by Sean Fitzgibbons. The 's was a mediocre time for sci-fi series in my opinion. Stargate SG-1 was one of the few good series.
Jackson, Don S. All the characters are brilliant. The chemistry between them is great. Some of the Stargate SG-1 plots have been a little bit weak but you wouldn't notice because of the brilliant cast.
The SG-1 team kind of remind me of The A-Team from the 80's because they stick together, they're good friends outside work and they always do the right things.
The villains in this series could rival many of the villains from Star Trek. We have had the SG-1 team fighting the likes of the G'ouald and the replicators.
The storylines have been consistently good throughout. All in all, this is a good series. My only criticism is the fact that the talented Teryl Rothery who plays Dr.

This device, which has been used by countless races since its creation, has more commonly become known as a " Stargate " — a name, discovered by Dr.
Daniel Jackson from hieroglyphs in the feature film. Stargate SG-1 takes place in the present day. When the series began, only technology that existed at the time in "real life" was employed by the series' protagonists - humans from Earth who are known throughout the galaxy as the Tau'ri.
In the preceding movie, Stargate , it was shown that in in Giza , Egypt , a mysterious ring was uncovered — buried in the sand long ago.
However, it wasn't until that Earth discovered the device's true purpose and was able to use it for exploration.
Ever since their first mission to a planet known as Abydos , Earth has continued using the Stargate for both exploration and the defense of humanity from races elsewhere in the universe - for the first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1 , a formidable parasitic enemy race known as the Goa'uld served as the main antagonist.
To this end, the Stargate Program which continues to be a secret to the public was created with a mandate of acquiring knowledge, allies, and technology for the defense of the planet.
However, Stargate Command the base in which the program is located has also focused on such efforts as trading and forming diplomatic relations with the rest of the galaxy.
It was through this program the main focus of Stargate SG-1 that Earth was able to acquire, over time, such necessities. Although an overall story arc was present from the start, the episodes of the first few seasons of Stargate SG-1 were mostly episodic, depicting the SG-1 team traveling to a different planet in each episode.
Gradually, the show became less episodic and more serialized. Over its ten-year run, the show built up a complex mythology involving the history of the galaxy and introduced many new alien races, such as the Ancients and the Asgard , whereas the only true alien to appear in the original film was Ra.
Originally, a race of beings known as the Goa'uld namely the Goa'uld Apophis served as the principal villains of the series. However, at the end of season three, a new threat was introduced - the Replicators.
Although they appeared in multiple episodes over the next five seasons, they were never as widely depicted as the Goa'uld were. In " Enemies ," the opening episode of season five, Apophis was finally defeated and Anubis replaced him as the main villain for the next three seasons.
