After all, who else is there? Even today, when hardship strikes a family think: serious financial hardship , it is all too easy for a couple to turn on each other: each one blames the other for the family's misfortune--fault-finding is an all-too-human reaction.
Take this sort of effect and magnify it, and you have the situation depicted in this movie. What I appreciated most about the film was the ambiguity.
Clearly, the personal beliefs of the viewer will influence what is ultimately taken away. To me, the film was deeply horrifying.
It is all too easy for members of a family or community to turn on each other when tragedy strikes, or even in the face of more ordinary hardship, given the seemingly arbitrary and unfair nature of life circumstance and all-too-often bad luck in a less advanced time.
To me, the film was quite engrossing on a psychological level, and the bottom-line take away was the horrific reality of what can happen to the human mind when it is immersed in a complicated brew of superstition, starvation, isolation, and ultimate desperation.
This is not just another throw away tag. That is the entire concept of this movie. It's a Puritan horror story. One that puts ambiguity a la "the crucible" to rest by immediately welcoming the audience to a revised Puritan world where, yes, witches DO exist.
The movie goes on to serve as a visual checklist of most every Puritan belief about witches, the devil, and their influence over individuals and society as a whole.
Nearly every crisis faced by the family in this film can be sourced to those beliefs. Certainly, the wonderful acting and gorgeously depressing visuals hold an enticement of their own, as well as an overall sense of impending dread throughout.
But, make no mistake, this is not a movie that is one bit concerned with entertaining you. Its only focus is to present a story that relays its original concept and at that, it succeeds brilliantly.
Those expecting an all out haunted house "scare fest" are going to be sorely and perhaps exhaustingly disappointed.
I love horror films of all kinds, and I certainly say "the scarier the better" and can enjoy frightening visuals and jump scares as much as the next person.
That is just not what this movie is about. This is a clear vision becoming realized. The argument that it's not a horror movie doesn't hold any weight, either.
It most certainly is a horror movie. Calling it a "slow burn" doesn't sit well with me, either. That seems to be a label thrown on any movie that wasn't made by Michael Bay.
This is a horror film from beginning to end. While it does take awhile to reach visceral climax, remember, to a puritan, losing faith and being damned forever was FAR more horrifying than a witch lurking outside your door.
The biggest problem with this movie, as with many of recent "hyped" horror movies, is in its advertising. The poster, trailer, and TV advertisements are plastered with positive quotes from reviewers.
The problem is that the average movie-goer and horror lover is looking for scares and a good time.
They do not understand that these reviewer's opinions are formed within an understanding of the film's concept. I can't blame anyone for saying they didn't like this movie.
It's not for everyone. It's not entertaining. It is dialogue and dialect heavy, with little action. But, speaking in terms of the director's vision, it is a realized masterpiece.

I bought this having listened to a podcast History in Technicolour which fascinated me. Beautifully photographed and a wonderfully accurate portrayal of life in New England, with tough life on the edge of survival.
We were enthralled by the story and it kept everyone engaged and silent throughout, which was a nice change. Afterwards I was surprised in that a very lively discussion ensued.
We have since looked at a YouTube further explanation of the plot which made the stories historical religious and cultural relevance even clearer.
We are all interested in seeing the film again in the light of what we have now learned. This film tells the story of a family of Christian pilgrims, who have moved from England to America, in the 17th century.
Having left an establish colony, the family settle in an isolated rural area - where life is a constant struggle.
As these tragic events unfold, relations within the family break down, causing each person to blame the others. The location where the filming took place is quite eye-catching.
And, fortunately, the acting is excellent. As a period drama, the dialogue is fascinating - and it's clear that time and attention has been paid to the details.
Yet there are two major faults with the film. First, far too much time is spent focussing on prayer - we literally witness this family praying time and time again.
I think the film could have portrayed such devout religious belief without the viewer having to actually see such seemingly endless prayer.
Second, the plot unfolds at too slow of a pace - and then, just as things happen, the movie abruptly ends!
What we get as the finale really ought to have been the mid-point of the film, thereby allowing for explanation and closure.
As it is, the conclusion isn't suitably adequate. This could have been developed into a really good film.
As it is, it's merely mediocre. This is a hugely atmospheric and scary movie at times, telling of the family who settle to farm on the edge of an impassable woods in the 17th century.
The language is very much of the time, with 'thee' and 'thine' being part of it. When the youngest child is taken from them by something, and the crops fail, the family turns against itself.
The eldest daughter Thomasin Anya Taylor-Joy becomes very much the focal point, accused by them of being a witch. The atmospheric effects are rather excessive as it make it hard to see the screen itself.
Just a little more clarity would have been satisfying, so it loses a star here. The makers of the DVD get another star knocked off by the lack of extras.
