DISOBEDIENCE - Official TrailerThe film is able to use writing to generate genuine emotional power, although it takes time to build up to such a crescendo in the movie's quietly moving finale.
As far as the acting is concerned, fans of Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams will not be disappointed here. Both actresses are outstanding in their respective roles, although I will say Weisz is slightly better.
She is able to show a genuine range of acting technique in her role, and remains captivating for viewers to watch from beginning to end.
My only real criticism of this film is that the pacing can be rather spotty at times, and can sometimes be slower than it needs to be given audiences' abilities to absorb plot details.
While the film never feels boring or annoying at all unless, of course, one only wants to watch explosions and CGI when you go to the movies, audiences sometimes feel a bit ready to move on with the narrative before a specific moment in the film may progress.
Otherwise, this is a great and thoughtful drama that addresses thought-provoking issues in the world today religion, sexuality, and family while boldly challenging audiences to consider their own responses to such issues themselves.

For the rest, I highly recommend you give it a watch of your own. This film was poignant, it was touching, it was erotic, but most of all, it was thought-provoking.
It brings to mind how much we, as humans, suffer at the hands of our ideals; we sit in cages of our own making, waiting for freedom when it calls yet forgetting that if we but open the door and fly it could be ours!
The love scenes were beautifully shot, and so romantically portrayed that I found myself crying at the tenderness.
The ending was so unexpected, in a wonderfully hopeful way, that I hope it blows down the doors of "bury your gay" tropes and allows light to shine on all happiness for future films and television not to mention, that its feminist aspects of freedom were a pleasant reminder that not all happy endings are perfect.
From the acting to the writing, to the subdued nature of the cinematography that lends to its realness, I cannot praise this glass-ceiling-shattering movie enough.
Unlike many films that address sexuality and faith, I felt Disobedience addresses obligation and expectation vs. I felt that was interesting placed against the orthodox backdrop.
The affair was not so much the cause of disruption of faith and family as it is dictated but the catalyst that brought questions of what is freedom?
Are the devout free if they do not have choice? If I belief in choice then can I be devout? It was more than a story to me but a question for each character to answer.
This is now one of my favorite lesbian films. I would definitely recommend this film. Let me say this about the acting in this movie - Alessandro Nivola's performance was a 10 out of 10, Rachel Weisz's performance was also 10 out of Then, Rachel McAdams comes along and blows apart the entire scale with her performance!
McAdams's talent for conveying multiple at times heartbreaking emotions at once with just a glance is both mind-blowing and stunning throughout the movie.
If it was up to me she would get every award this year for best supporting actress and I really hope she does! The movie was done well by Sabastian Lelio as it allows the audience to feel like we are in the same room with the characters watching all of it go down.
Every LGBT woman will be able to relate. Hell, anyone who has ever had to let go of someone they love due to life circumstance will too.
This one really had an effect on me. I thank Rachel Weisz for optioning the book and bringing this movie to us.

I knew how good Weisz could be, but McAdams was a revelation in her role. I doubt we'll ever see the two Rachels paired in further films.
I'll always recall how wonderful they were as the two leads in this film - but I won't be watching it again. I'd simply think, 'What a missed opportunity.
It's much too hands-off in its treatment of the all-important lesbian backstory to be comprehensible. It's as if the powers holding the film's reins were afraid of producing something too easy to understand and too easy to enjoy.
We're simply not given the information we need clevery incorporated into a forward-moving plot, of course to enter fully into the fictional dream.
The film is mean, then, where it should be generous. And it pulls a punch at the very end to such an extent that you feel 'played'. The film is also heavy-handed where it should be subtle, in scenes involving ritual.
It's like one of those historical novels which throws its research at you, forgetting that - in one way or another - the human heart occupies the centre ground of our stories.
The shining exception to this is the beautifully-scripted opening scene in the synagogue, with the brilliant Anton Lesser.
I got this for my gf and myself to sit and watch and it was fantastic, truely brilliant ending that punched me right in the chest and brought tears down my face.
My gf had fallen asleep though as she could not understnad what was happening. In these days I woud expect there to be subtitles.
I was very shocked they were not an option. I would certainly recommend this movie though the final act is quite powerful and it truely got me I will admit.
This was a really interesting film for me as I grew up in a similar area to this and because of various geographic problems in the area I had to go to a Jewish school.
I loved the school and we had a Rebbetzin as a tutor wife of a Rabbi or a female Rabbi in some parts of the faith.
She was amazing and I still regard her as the finest tutor I ever had. The film shows the closed society, something many non-Jewish people don't realise still exists today in the Orthodox faith, it also shows the way in which women are still subservient to men, still classed as "not quite equal".
I found both the lead women in this quite extraordinary and mesmerising to watch and I found the film moving in so many ways. However, the one big downside for me was the whole "spitting" thing - such a male idea of "sexy".
It is not a lesbian thing, nor a woman thing. It is a male fantasy thing and quite vile in my opinion!! Would love the film to be re-shot without that bit and I would have preferred a more defined end - whichever way it went.
It always feels like a cop-out to me when the Director can't be bothered to finish a film properly. Just my opinion. One person found this helpful.
This is a fabulous movie. Honest, sexy and gives rare insight into Orthodox Jewish life. I enjoyed this film, but didn't understand everything, perhaps its not possible to understand why people have different beliefs, but it is possible to respect differences.
Not sure there were any resolutions, except religion is a powerful influence in the decisions some people make, decisions detrimental to themselves.
