Beautiful guitar song - \When they took one of the spur trails that had been cut through a stand of elms and silver birches he quickened his pace, treading carefully on the uneven ground.
The couple, feeling no necessity for stealth of any kind, continued to talk and laugh, their careless feet rattling pebbles and cracking dry twigs.
He quacked his step still more, and then halted, peered around a thick tree trunk to look into a natural glade, grass carpeted and ringed by brush and birches, the silvery trunks refracting the stray beams of moonlight to provide a soft, romantic illumination.
The couple were on the far side, Annie leaning her back against a tree as Hank stood in front of her, free arm encircling her shoulders as he kissed her.
Edge watched indifferently for a few moments, as their passion increased, and the two bodies began to grind together.
Then he moved to the left, skirting the glade, catching glimpse of the couple as the glade came into view between the trees. Then he was behind them, with just the thickness of a tree trunk between.
Hank sprang back and went for his gun. But he was right handed and that hand was trapped in a sling. He looked down at his helplessness with the shock of sudden realization while Annie gasped.
Edge grinned an expression that offered the couple no comfort. His voice was strong and he did not flinch as Edge stepped quickly up to him.
He took his time emptying the shells. He tossed them in one direction, the gun in the other, into the trees. He looked at Annie.
When Hammond said I was called Edge it meant something to you. One was a sergeant. The others called him Frank. I thought I heard the name Hedge but it could have been Edge.
She looked again at Edge. Not with all five of them stuck together as they were. Forrest had talked a lot about the years before the war in Arizona.
That was how he had made his living—collecting bounties for capturing fugitives heading for the Mexican border: dead or alive—always dead when Forrest brought them in.
They mention any place in particular? Any town? She was too scared to have any creative ideas. Obliged for your help. Why should I kill you?
Way things were going before I broke in you and the lady showed all signs of having the hots for each other. Whereas, if we make a deal He turned as if to leave, then back to face the woman again.
You have five dollars that belongs to me, Miss Annie. Way I see it, I was a guest of the State and the State ought to pay for my board and lodging.
Edge grinned and stepped up close to her. He grasped her arm and swung her around, placing her between himself and Hank, so that he was able to watch them both with ease.

Nov 27, Wayne rated it it was amazing. Great, over the top violent tale of the west. Not much of a fan of westerns.
Until I found the books of George G. Gilman , a. Terry Harknett. The best, in my opinion, writer of westerns. Even though he's from Essex, England.
Not many cow pokes from across the pond. The first in a series is always a touchy read. Sometimes it's great. Others it's not so, but it evolves into a great series.
This is one of the rare cases. This was a great opener. This had everything you could want from this genre Great, over the top violent tale of the west.
This had everything you could want from this genre. Gun play. Even more violence. Not so much sex, but you can't have it all.
The last scene in this book is worth the price in itself. Dec 19, Brandon rated it really liked it. Edge is one of those characters that if you aren't careful, you will find yourself empathizing with, even though you realize from early on that he is a mean, vindictive, cruel character.
This does not diminish the fact that he is also an awesome character. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 was because it ended WAY too early.
Jun 27, Shaun Gregory rated it it was amazing. George Gilman wrote this series as well as the Adam Steele Series of books too. A lot of Western literary fans condemned thieve on publishing as porno westerns because of the graphic violence and sex.
Not for everyone I agree, great escapism and now available on Kindle. Aug 02, Kevin Dumcum rated it did not like it Shelves: western.
Toni g redeeming or worthwhile. Skip it. May 24, Dan Blackley rated it really liked it Shelves: western. The cover says, The Most violent new series.
They weren't kidding. This is book one of the Edge series and it really is a great read. This western series is about a man named Edge who is ruthless killer when he needs to be.
I have 22 copies of the Edge series and can't wait to read them all. Jan 05, Perry rated it did not like it Shelves: western. Every time I am lured in by the promise of "Exciting 70s western paperback" and every time I am burned by someone who saw Django once and thought unrelenting misery and ironically detached protagonists are the only things you should take out of it.
Apr 24, Roy McCullough rated it liked it. Using the current lockdown to revisit a few old series from back in the day. Nothing too complicated here - a quick, predictable but entertaining read.
Thinking back, it sure seems like the classic movie Outlaw Josey Wales took some plot lines from The Edge series. Pedantic, thin, no rationale for killing people other than "it's the west.
Good to finally, after 35 years, to read the first book in the serious. Will continue to read the serious, occasionally, as a comfort from the past.
May 12, Ralph Carlson rated it liked it. A fast paced and very violent western. Enjoyable read if you like that. Jul 06, Joshua Bunnell rated it it was amazing.
Definitely lives up to is slogan, most violent western written. Nov 15, Kevin Downer rated it really liked it. Loved it. But I need to shower off all of the blood.
You'd probably have to be a neanderthal to enjoy The Loner Edge 1. Well if a neanderthal could read I mean. What's that say about Hersom?
I'm well into Edge 2 by the time I wrote this. Out of desperation, I went back to one the first genre's I used to read, Westerns.

And not the realistic historic fiction type of Western, but the testosterone fueled, ultra violent, sexist, spaghetti western paperback kind, that used to take about half the shelf space of the Men's Adventure section of the mall book store and several levels of the drug store spinner racks.
The likes of which Clint Eastwood and director Sergio Leone revolutionized the western movies with. First published in , its cheesy book from a cheesy decade.
No politically correctness or high literary merit to be found here. Ain't it grand? Edge is a mean son-of-bitch that's really no better than the savage men he hunts down.
Between the war, and the brutal murder of his brother - the last of Edge's family- all compassion has been burned out of him or it just unleashed his psychopathic tenancies.
I'd never want to pass Edge in the street but he's a helluva good time to read about. Nov 15, Boots rated it it was ok Shelves: civil-war-fiction , native-american , 19th-century-fiction , pulp-fiction.
The first book in this series is surprisingly ho-hum for being "the most violent story that ever erupted from our native territory".
Oh, it's got violence, sure. I lost count of the bodies after fifteen. But the character of Edge is pretty dang flat and the basic revenge plot is devoid of any nuance.
Asking too much of a pulp western? But this one got a little silly in its picaresque journey. Edge meets so many ridiculous characters and mostly kills them , that I was literally skimming The first book in this series is surprisingly ho-hum for being "the most violent story that ever erupted from our native territory".
Edge meets so many ridiculous characters and mostly kills them , that I was literally skimming by the time he got to the Apaches attacking the wagon train.
Too too silly. I also feel like maybe Gilman improved as he went along. The narrative is pretty humdrum and so much of the dress and behavior in this was weirdly anachronistic--and if he used the word "boot" one more time with regard to holstering a rifle on a horse, I was going to have to start shredding.
Lackluster, weakly written introduction--and this edition is riddled with publishing errors. And yet somehow I keep reading 'em.
Must be the cent price tag. Aug 10, Michael Van Vleet rated it did not like it.

War was all but over when a damn Louisiana sharpshooter shot poor old Joe right between the eyes. Her lips moved in words which were silent to Edge, but not to another man, Message In The Bottle had been waiting, perhaps sitting at a table, to the left of the doorway. The north had been v ictorious and Joe was sure to be proud that he had been a captain in the Federal cavalry. He ought to be at the head.
The boy moved forward a few paces, manhandling his lame leg, then halted, all excitement draining from his features to be replaced by a deep worry.
They reined in their horses just short of the gateway where the boy waited and the sergeant looked down at him wearily, and then dismounted.
Like the others he had an unkempt beard many days old and red-rimmed eyes from riding into the sun all afternoon. Where is he?
The smile was gone now and the man looked grave. He spat into the dust and Patch growled. Not any day. He screwed up his eyes and when he opened them again the air seemed to be tinged with a dark mist.
Joe caught one. War was all but over when a damn Louisiana sharpshooter shot poor old Joe right between the eyes. Me and Billy Seward here, why we filled him so full lead they had to get a horse to drag him to his grave.
We buried your brother in a fitting manner, boy. He felt numb with shock, wanted the men to turn and ride away so that he could go into the house and give vent to his emotions in private.
Probably are a man in everything except years—living out here alone in the wilderness like you do. It gripped him like an icy hand, freezing the sweat of the day to his body.
There was a Starr rifle and a pair of Colts in the house, with any number of knives. But a boy did not go armed to meet his only brother.
Joe died in debt, you see. Filthy rotten liar. Right boys? He wanted to play me double or nothing. Ma and Pa taught us both good. Frank Forrest.
His anger exploded as a red mist before his eyes and the words poured in a torrent as he limped awkwardly over to his dog.
Joe never gambled. Every cent he earned went straight into the bank so we could do things with this place. Big things.
Get off our land. Defiance was a sheen in his eyes and a firmness in his mouth line. The expression did not alter when he saw Forrest draw an Army issue.
He spat into the dust. A thousand would have been enough. Where do you keep the money? Once more. Where is it? As he took a pace forward, towards the big sergeant, there were suddenly six gun muzzles trained upon him as the other men aimed muskets and revolvers, their expressions as menacing as the man who led them.
But the instant was gone and a scream of agony burst from his lips as the pain made itself felt and he pitched forward, his good leg folding under him like a straw as the smashed kneecap gushed more blood for hungry flies.
